Project arts educational theater program
MISSION
Since 2007, our mission is to provide free or donation based educational arts and theatrical experiences that are inclusive of the LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, and asexual or allied) community, BIPOC (black, Indigenous and people of color) community, and any persons that identify as disabled. We also provide affordable and free theatrical productions of contemporary musicals. Tickets in the past range from free to $15. Our goal is to make sure anyone without means can fully participate in our projects and productions.
history
Project Arts (then know as Project Theater Project) began in 2007 and put on a production of William Finn's March of the Falsettos." The project was made up of mainly jewish actors and incorporated workshops on HIV/Aids as well as LGBTQIA issues as part of the production.
Rent educational project
Project Arts put on "Rent School Edition" as an educational project in 2011. We reached out to underserved communities in West Philadelphia through a partnership with The Rotunda in West Philadelphia. The program was free to all participants and had a built in curriculum where the actors learned about the history of Act Up and attended other workshops tied to the content of the musical. The cast performed 10 shows which were priced at $10 and offered free to local LGBTQIA/BIPOC organizations and students.
Avenue q school edition
In 2014 we produced "Avenue Q School Edition" as an educational project. The project was free for all participants and we did extensive outreach in LGBTQIA and BIPOC communities. The educational program included lessons in puppetry, a history of Sesame Street, and more. The cast performed 7 shows which were priced at $10 and offered free to local LGBTQIA/BIPOC organizations and students.
