Cult Broadway Musicals, Rock Operas, and Musical Movies Class
18 and Up only
WARNING! - If there is anything you have thought that is taboo or just plain wrong, multiple that by 10 and that is the level of appropriateness we are talking about. This is the class that the GOP imagines each antifa democrat teacher is actually teaching.
The best thing I can say about this class is that you won't be able to watch or listen to at least a third of the musicals, rock operas, and movie musicals included. But I mean that in the best of ways. There are amazing rock operas on film or broadway included here. We will also explore cult musicals and movie musicals. I promise you that you'll learn about shows and films you never heard of, and probably never ever wanted to. If I do my job well you will quit the class. I am kidding here. There are as many amazing films and musicals we will explore. The class is meant to be taken at your own pace and will be open for six months. There will be detailed workshops on some of the content based on class interest. Some workshops cost extra and are optional but one is included. Each class comes with a mini digital book with recommended articles, a Spotify Playlist (recommended premium membership for the class), and a Video Playlist. We will have 10 units in which we explore different aspects of this material. Student input and choice will shape what you learn. The ten units will all be working towards a final project (that can be easy or complex) that can be shared to the class or internet if you wish. Class is work at your own pace within a 6 month period of time. There is no set schedule.
GOALS
The goals of the class are as follows
1. Expose you to as many musicals as possible based on your interests.
2. Show you at least 10 new musicals which will be your new favorites.
3. Make you a fan of musical theater even if you think you hate them.
4. Make you fall in love with musicals or remind you why you did in the first place.
5. Teach you about the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) This is an inclusive class.
TEACHING STYLE
My teaching style is based on learning being more experiential. You can work at your own pace with 6 months to take the course. We use techniques called Self-Directed Learning, Project Based Learning, and Art Integration. The goal here is to enjoy the learning for its own sake. I don't give out grades. The main goal of this class is to listen to, create, and experience musical theater. Everything you learn will be based on your personal interests. The work you do in the class will be based on a project of your choice that includes arts and music in the process. There will be 10 assignments that all work towards a final project of your choice. The class is based on what is called Project Based Learning. After every assignment you will communicate with a teaching coach who will help you make next step of the project based on your feedback. I will explain this to everyone in more detail once the class officially starts. Each student gets individualized tasks, lessons, and discussions. Every student is working on their own goals and projects. There are group project opportunities as well.
PROJECT BASED LEARNING
What is PBL? Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which students learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects. Students work on a project over an extended period of time – from a week up to a semester – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question. They demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public product or presentation for a real audience. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills. Project Based Learning unleashes a contagious, creative energy among students and teachers.
